When an assignment is unpublished students will not see it in the syllabus table nor in upcoming assignments. To them it does not exist. An unpublished assignment will not create a column in the Gradebook until it is published.

Canvas always allows students to submit and resubmit assignments even after the due date. However, if students submit after the due date, assignments are marked late in SpeedGrader and the Gradebook. Students only see their last submission but instructors can view all submissions.

Publish an assignment with only a due date

The easiest way to set up an assignment is to set the due date and publish it. That way students know when its due and if they are late in submitting their assignments, they will marked late. You can then make any necessary adjustments to grades.

Publish an assignment with availability dates

If you prefer to restrict dates for when an assignment can be submitted, you can set Available from and/or Available to dates. To minimize confusion it is best to keep the Due and Until dates the same. In the example below, students can only submit from February 15 at 8 am to Feb 17 at 8 am.

Setting the Available From date prevents students from submitting too early.

Setting the Available Until date will not allow students to submit assignments after that date, although you would have to adjust the date each time for special cases.

Students will still the (published) assignment but it will be displayed as locked [1]

Students submitting once

All assignment submissions can be viewed in SpeedGrader. Below is a graded assignment for a student with only one submission [1]. The grade and any feedback/comments will be available to the student.

Students who resubmit their assignment - no grades yet

When students resubmit an assignment, instructors will be able to see all submissions in SpeedGrader by viewing them in drop menu below Submission to View [1]. In the diagram below the the most recent submission is selected [3] and displayed in DocViewer [3]

However, students only see their most recent submission even if the previous submission(s) have been commented on.

If an instructor has not yet graded an assignment that has been resubmitted, they can only grade [4] the student's most recent submission [3]. However, comments with annotated feedback using DocViewer are available to the instructor for all submissions.

Students who resubmit their assignment - first submission already graded

When a student has more than one submission for an assignment, there will be a Submission to view [1}

If you have already graded an assignment that a student has resubmitted you can apply the same grade to the new assignment by clicking the Use this same grade for the resubmission link. You can also assign another grade to the resubmission.

In this scenario a grade was already assigned to the first submission [2]. The instructor can choose to do one of the following:

Keep the grade as entered in the first submission [2]
Click Use this grade for the resubmission [5]
Enter a new grade in [4] for the resubmission

Below are graded submissions for the discussed assignment.
